The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on July 12, 2023, issued a notification regarding direction under section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 with regard to the abeyance of enforcement of provision related to labeling requirements for fermented milk products.
The following has been stated in the notification-
The Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2023 specifies the labeling requirement for standards of fermented milk products. And enforcement of these provisions of the amendment regulations is w.e.f August 01, 2023.
The representations which have been received from various stakeholders on the provision of the amendment regulations relating to the use of the term dahi primarily in the nomenclature of the fermented milk products and optionally together with any other designation (prevalent regional common name) on the label. Based on these representations it is being reviewed by FSSAI for appropriate revision, the finalization of which is likely to take some time.
